Calling St. Michael's parishioners to join Grace St. Paul's and St. Philip's In The Hills Episcopal Churches as part of the Episcopal Coalition to build a home for a low income family. Be part of this inter-parochial fellowship to work together to build a home at Habitat for Humanity Tucson's third annual "Building Freedom Day" Saturday, September 11! Parish volunteers are needed for this project all levels of construction and non construction skills needed. Volunteer sign-up sheet is located on the ushers' cabinet. St. Michael's volunteer coordinator is Byron Brandon, who can be contacted for more information.

The Society of Mary invites all to recite the Rosary this Saturday at 7:45 AM, in honor of the Blessed Virgin's Assumption.

Next Sunday's services well be dedicated to Saint Mary the Virgin, Feast of the Assumption. Following the 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM Mass, a delicious blueberry pancake breakfast will be served in the Parish Center. Donations will be kindly accepted to cover the cost of the meal.Social Concerns meeting this Sunday, August 15th following the 8:00 AM Mass in the Parish Center. All are invited to attend.

Friends Of The Organ (FOTO) meeting this Thursday, August 12, at 6:30 PM, in the Church featuring an organ demonstration. Following the meeting, there will be "heavy" Hors D'oeurves and beverages served. Come listen to what our Aeolian Skinner pipe organ can do! Free. All are invited;, bring friends. A sign up sheet is on the ushers' cabinet.

Announcements for Week Ending August 1st, 2004

Father Daniel Richards is leaving this week for a community-building conference in Ireland, sponsored by the Institute for Servant Leadership. He will return August 18th.

The Church Pantry needs donations - canned and non-perishable items involving meat - ravioli, tuna, soup, etc. - are especially needed this time of year. Please bring your donations to the church or the church office.

English Faire Meeting Tonight

There is an organizational meeting for the English Faire tonight, Wednesday, July 14th at 7 PM for one hour. All interested parishioners are invited to attend. Please come and help us get organized for this important project! - Karen

The English Faire - In What Town Are You a Citizen-Volunteer?

Everyone in the parish registry has been assigned to one of the "towns" at the English Faire, and will soon be contracted by a Mayor or Town Cryer. If you have a preference, it's not too late to tell us where you belong! Here are the choices:

Canterbury - Everything to do with the church itself, including church tours, sacred music and religious items.

London Town - This is where you'll find the "jumble" (rummage) sale, plus Piccadilly Circus - fun, games, face painting, and jumping castle for the kiddies.

Stratford-Upon-Avon - Here's the place for food and entertainment, including the Dirty Duck Pub.

Oxford - Books, books, and more books!

York - High-class items can be found here, including plants, collectibles, art and photos.

This is our annual "open house" to all of Tucson, and our major fundraiser each year. Everyone is needed to help make the English Faire a success! Start collecting those items, and let us know where you fit in. Sign-up sheets can be found in the back of the church. Watch this page and the schedule page for updates!

Dear Friends: We have arrived at the threshold of Easter. Alleluia! Lent and Holy Week have flown by. It's been great to see some new faces among us. I've been wondering if the Passion of the Christ movie has had some effect on our attendance- probably some.

During Lent and Holy Week the themes I've thinking, praying, and sharing about have centered around two basic hopes: that we can free ourselves with the Spirit's help from the limits we put on our love of God and our neighbor, and, in doing this take on more and more the mind of Christ as the way we view the world and all the people we meet. The time in which we live is demanding this of us and even dragging us, kicking and screaming into a new way of living.

The biggest shift in mentality to enable all this is the Crucified mind. The Crucified mind is one with God and neighbor, seeks the good of the other, is willing to repent of personal faults, while overlooking the faults of others, and go the extra mile. The Crucified mind is able to let go of all those judgements of others which separate us from God and all of our brothers and sisters. We can meet each person and situation (even brought close in the media) trying to see it through the eyes of Christ: conquering the evil and pain in the world by a willingness to take some of it in to be destroyed by love- Christ's love in us!

But another mind is vying for our attention and among religious people and clearly has the upper hand in our day: the Crusading mind. The Crusading mindset permeates our thoughts with conviction about everything that is wrong in our world and other people- especially those who differ from us. From a position of self-righteousness we clearly see who is in the wrong, who our enemies are, and we take on the goal of annihilating them. We become very careful about who we share the love of Christ with because many are unworthy of His love. Our judgements make us more and more isolated, enjoying gathering only with like-minded "Crusaders" like ourselves.

St. Paul, who was the greatest example of a person who changed by God's grace from a Crusading mindset to a Crucified Mind, writes in Philippians 2:4ff: Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who,k though he was in the form of God, did not regard egaulity with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness, and being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death--even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
