The Messenger

The April 2011 issue of The Messenger is now available on this blog's sidebar (or by clicking the link in this sentence!). This is the first issue edited by yours truly, with the generous help of former editor Alicia Basemann who has recently retired. The version here incorporates two corrections in the first article, which had typos in the copy that was emailed earlier this week. Oops!

For future issues I'm hoping to revive a feature from a number of years ago, profiling a different parishioner each month. Any volunteers? This parish is full of people who have led interesting lives and given much back to God, the parish and the community. I, for one, want to know more about you all!

Also, I'm looking for your reminiscences and tributes about Father Fowler, whom I never met. His memorial service here will be on Saturday, April 30th at 11 AM. I'd like to be able to compile the parish's memories of our founding rector as a special supplement to the next issue of The Messenger. Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?

Retreat! - and other upcoming events

Our Lady of the Desert House of Prayer (north parking lot north of the church) will hold a Lenten Retreat this Saturday, April 2, 2011 from 9:15 AM to Noon.  A Pot Luck will follow at noon. All are invited.


St. Michael’s Parish Day School 2011 ART EXPO and AUCTION will take place Friday, April 29 from 5:30 to 8:30 PM.  a showcase o student art, visiting Tucson artists Valerie Galloway and Janet Burner, live entertainment; hands-on art activities for young children; wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres for adults; pizza for kids. SAVE THE DATE: APRIL 29^TH  ~ All are Welcome!

THIS SATURDAY – Greet the Guatemala Maya visitors. Public welcome with greetings from Arizona indigenous and Tucson’s Guatemalan community at 5PM , a meal at 6PM and program after everyone is seated. No charge but donations heartily solicited.

Don’t forget….TAIZE MEDITATION SERVICE this Tuesday at 6:30 PM!  All are welcome!

The Annunciation

Today is the Feast of the Annunciation of Our Lord.The Mass Saturday morning will be in honor of this feast.

Please join us for the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:45 AM, followed by Mass at 8:30 AM.

Completing your Lenten Saturday morning, please join the Meditation Group at Our Lady of the Desert Meditation House (just north of the church). Parking is available in the north parking lot.

All are welcome and urged to attend!

The Reverend John Clinton Fowler

As most parishioners know, the Reverend John Clinton Fowler, the founding rector of this parish, passed away on the morning of Saturday, March 19th, following a heart attack. A special service commemorating Father Fowler’s life and contributions will be announced at a future date. If you have a special memory of Father Fowler to share, please write it up and submit it to church@stmichael.net or the church office.

Notes from the Parish Office

Received word today that Fr. Fowler (the founding Rector of St. Michaels) suffered a heart attack last Friday and is in intensive care. He has contracted pneumonia and is in critical condition. Please keep him in your prayers.

The ECW meeting this Wednesday at 10:30 am will be held in the church due to the Book Fair in the Parish Center. We hope you will bring a friend and join us to hear the speaker from Pima Council of Aging and what services they provide.

The “Business of God Luncheon” takes place this coming Monday, March 21 at 11:30 AM in the Parish Center. The speaker will be Dr. Daniel Joslyn-Siemiatkoski. The title of his presentation is: “ Holy Women, Holy Men: Looking at the New Calendar of Saints.” The luncheon is sponsored by The Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP) and is catered by Enjoy Cooking. The lunch is $15 per person ~ reservations may be made by calling the church office no later than noon this Friday. All are welcome.
