Help Us Welcome Our New Rector!

With great joy, we announce that the Rev. David Hedges, the current Rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Sycamore, IL, has accepted the call from our Bishop Kirk Smith, as requested by our Vestry, to be the next Rector of our spiritual home, St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. On 14 August, Father Dave will begin his first Sunday at St. Michael’s by officiating the Morning Prayer at 9:00 AM and celebrating the sung Solemn High Mass at 9:30 AM.  His wife, Carly Flagg, and their daughter, Zoe, will arrive later, in time for Zoe to begin class at our parish day school on 18 August.

Fr. Dave received his Bachelor of Arts in History from San Francisco State University in 2002 and his Master of Divinity from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in 2005. He was ordained Deacon at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, in 2005, and priested at St. James Cathedral, Chicago, six months later. He was Curate at St. Mary’s, Crystal Lake, IL (2005-2007), then Rector of St. Peter’s (2007-present). He is passionate about the liturgy, sacramental pastoral care, and about the work of inviting into the church those who are not yet its members. He is excited by St. Michael's because of its balanced blend of catholic liturgy and social action, as well as the presence of the parochial school community.

Fr. Dave is a member of the Brotherhood of Saint Gregory, a religious community of men in the Episcopal Church, whose members, lay and ordained, follow a common rule of life and serve the church on parochial, diocesan, and national levels. Their Rule includes prayer, service, stewardship, and individual renewal among other matters. Brothers may be married, partnered, or single, and aim to follow St. Gregory the Great as "servants of the servants of God" whether in church or in society. Dave was thrilled to discover the sign at the back of St. Michael's saying Soli Deo Gloria, the very motto of the Brotherhood! Shortly before coming to St. Michael's, Dave will become a Novice Brother, and will be properly addressed as Brother Dave for short.

Dave's wife, Carly, will be serving the Tucson community as an American Sign Language Interpreter. She has an MA in ASL-English Interpretation from Gallaudet University, and a BA in Early Childhood Education from Smith College, and taught ASL-English Interpretation at the university level for sixteen years. Other graduate work includes study in Counseling and Developmental Psychology. Carly enjoys yoga, running, gardening, and cooking. She shares with Dave a common interest in letter-writing and postal ephemera. Dave enjoys bowling, photography, and long road trips.
Their daughter Zoe (12) will be enrolled at St. Michael's School. She has been a Girl Scout for six years and has earned her Bronze Award for efforts in increasing community literacy. She also enjoys horseback riding, drawing, and theatre.

As we joyfully welcome our new Rector and his family, we must wholeheartedly acknowledge our congregations’ enthusiastic participation in our self-study, our Nominating Committee’s wisdom and perseverance, our Vestry’s prayerful discernment, our Interim Rector Fr. Richard Mallory’s loving care, Canon Russ Smith’s consultation, the Rev. Canon Megan Traquair’s guidance, and our Bishop’s blessing throughout the challenging process. Alleluia!

Respectfully yours,
Howard Creswell, Junior Warden, and Ke Chiang (John) Hsieh, Senior Warden

Termite Closure and Other Announcements

September 27, 2015

Dear St. Michael's Church and School Community,

It has recently been discovered that there is a termite infestation in the church building. The church’s Buildings and Grounds Committee along with the Church Wardens and Interim Rector moved quickly to address this situation before any further damage takes place. After a thorough inspection and consultation with a reputable extermination company, the decision was made to proceed immediately with treatment. The process will involve completely tenting the church building, sealing the Bride's Room and Womble Library from the church. The tented area will then be fumigated for approximately 24 hours in order to kill all the dry-wood termites. During the process, the entire church and school campus will be closed. There will be no access to the church, offices or classrooms until the process is complete including clean up, ventilation, and inspection of every office, classroom, work space and storage area. The complete lock down is necessary for safety and precautionary measures.

With that in mind, the following action will be taken on the following timetable in order to have the least disruption to the church and school community:

·       Monday, October 12 - The process will begin for tenting the church and sealing adjacent rooms.

·       Tuesday, October 13 - The tenting and preparation work continues

·       Wednesday, October 14 - The Day School will close at 12:00 noon for Fall Break until Monday, October 19. The campus will need to be completed vacated by 2:00 p.m. at which time all offices and classrooms will be locked. No one will be allowed to return to the church/school grounds until the process is fully completed. There will be NO AFTER CARE ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14.

·       Sunday, October 18 - The church/school campus will reopen once the "all clear" is given by the extermination company.

Precautionary actions prior to the lock down will include:
•     Removal of all air-breathing animals and tanked fish into the courtyard on the southwest section of the school.
•     Removal of all food items (except canned goods), and Communion Elements and Vessels away from all rooms in and adjacent to the church, including the church kitchen.

Even though only the church proper will be tented and fumigated, temporary closing signs will be posted on all doors and gates throughout the church/school campus. Please adhere to safety precautions during this extermination process.  It is a relief to note that there will be no residue on any surfaces following the procedure as the vapor used dissipates once it is in the open air.

We appreciate the work of the church’s Buildings and Grounds Committee and the cooperation of the church and school community as we deal quickly with this matter. Should anyone have questions regarding material used, safety data sheets are available in the church and school offices.

Blessings,

Fr. Richard Mallory                                          Margaret Moore
Interim Rector                                                   Head of School

A Religious Response to Climate Change – II: Living

Thank you for joining us for "A Religious Response to Climate Change: Learning" held at St Michael and All Angels Parish in Tucson on October 4th. Please join us if you can - and bring friends! - to the followup session, "A Religious Response to Climate Change II: Living" to be held at St Michael's on Saturday, December 13th, 9am-2pm. All are welcome!
A Religious Response to Climate Change – II: Living
Advent, Stewardship, and Metanoia
The Episcopal Parish of Saint Michael and All Angels
602 North Wilmot Road, Tucson, Arizona 85711
Saturday, December 13, 2014, 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Mass (optional) at 8:30 AM & lunch at 12:00 PM (free-will offering)
“We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways.” – Enriching Our Worship, Eucharistic Prayer
“On November 2nd the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which represents mainstream scientific opinion, said that it was extremely likely that climate change is the product of human activity... Many factors influence the climate but perhaps the single most important is carbon dioxide (CO)… At the start of the industrial revolution, in about 1800, there were 280 parts per million (ppm) of CO in the atmosphere. That had been the level for most of human history. This year, however, concentrations exceeded 400 ppm, the first time it had reached that level for a million years. Most of the increase has been caused by people burning fossil fuels.” – The Economist, November 2, 2014.
How do we respond to the realities of climate change with an eye to stewardship of earth’s resources and responsible changes in practice? In other words, given what we have learned, how are we now to live?
As we seek to make an informed religious response to climate change, we come together to discuss and discern plausible actions. In this follow-up to our first forum on climate change (October 4th), we will seek practices for sustainable living, related to food, water, and energy.
We will be invited into theological reflection on the spiritual context for environmental action by The Rev. John R. Smith, The Rev. Nadine Martin, and The Rev. Dr. John R. Leech.
  • What does it mean to have stewardship of all our natural resources?
  • What change of direction (metanoia) is needed for sustainable living?
We will be listening to presentations on challenges of sustainable living from:
  • Alexander D. Cronin, Associate Professor, Department of Physics and College of Optical Sciences, University of Arizona.
  • Margot Garcia, Professor Emeritus, Department of Urban and Regional Studies and Planning, Virginia Commonwealth University.
  • Taralynn Reynolds, Population and Sustainability Organizer, Center for Biological Diversity.
The presenters will address questions concerning energy, water and food in terms of:
  • What is a “sustainable world”?
  • What are the current levels and rate of consumption?
  • What are the effects of current consumption, especially on energy, water and soil?
  • What are the means to change the current trends and where are we in this change?
Our speakers will participate in a moderated panel discussion after their presentations.
Moderator of the panel: Ke Chiang Hsieh, Professor Emeritus of Physics, University of Arizona. Senior Warden, St. Michael & All Angels Parish.
Host: The Rev. John R. SmithRector, St. Michael & All Angels Parish.
RSVP by calling (520) 886-7292, Monday through Thursday, or e-mail to church@stmichael.net, no later than December 8th.  Please leave your name, your affiliation, and the number of people planning to come with you.  http://smallangelstucson.org/ https://www.facebook.com/smallangelstucson

Calendars, We've Got Calendars

As if last night's mega-entry weren't full of calendar-y goodness, I've been experimenting with the Schedule page on the new church website. There are now three calendars displayed there:

1. a Google Calendar, with selected events available for public view
2. a parish events calendar, with one-time or weekly-during-Lent listings
3. an undated Weekly During Lent calendar, organized by days of the week only, with all the regularly scheduled masses and other events that take place every week.

It's probably a little confusing, especially since certain events (e.g. "Staying with the Ship") are listed on all three calendars, while others are listed in only one or two places. Feel free to tell me in email (mavarin @ aol.com) or in person what you think works and what doesn't, and how we can make it better. Should vestry meetings, the praying of the rosary and other parish functions be in the Google Calendar, or should it be just for public-oriented events such as the organ concert? Do we need three calendars, or will the Google and weekly ones suffice? One advantage of the Google calendar is that I can add authorized users (such as someone from Social Concerns) to add events to it. Another is that you can click on the event name for further details. A third is that I don't have to retype everything each week, but can just add the newly-scheduled items.

So check it out and let me know, okay? Thanks!

Karen
