Casa Maria, Stewardship University, and Other Announcements

From: Nancy Vernon
Date: Thu, Apr 28, 2016 at 1:20 PM
Subject: THE REV. CANON TIMOTHY DOMBECK!
To: "St. Michael's Church"

Dear Parishioners,

Canon Dombeck will bring his nationally recognized Stewardship University to St. Michael's on Saturday, May 7, from 9:30 am to 3:00 PM.

His work is invaluable for leaders and parishioners at the crucial juncture in St. Michael's history - to see stewardship as our giving thanks to God. He creates a strong sense of community in addressing one of the most taboo and emotionally charged topic in our society...money.

He deals with the practicalities on how to address stewardship, estate planning and giving people the opportunity to give of their abundance to their church and parish as thanksgiving to God for our abundant life.

We encourage all vestry members, members of the nominating committee and those in leadership positions to attend.

We also highly endorse this high energy and engaging experience as a valuable educational, transformative, spiritual opportunity for all parishioners.

Lunch will be catered by Chef Andy with a suggested donation of $15, which will help defray the cost of food. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Signed,

John Hsieh, Senior Warden

RIchard Mallory, Interim Rector

Last year's "Meals from Mom" drive was a big success!

The “Meals from Mom” food drive began last weekend. Celebrate Mother’s Day this year by donating a bag of groceries for the needy in honor of, or in memory of your mother.  Remember to get your grocery bag from in back of church or from an usher. Return the filled bag on Mother’s Day ~ May 8th or sooner. P.S. we are completely out of Mac and Cheese and a local grocer has peanut butter on sale!

The Bishop’s Office will post this document for all potential aspirants for being our new Rector to see. Please thank the NC for their past hard work and for their willingness to face the coming intense challenges to produce three candidates for the Vestry to choose the best new Rector for us! Please keep on praying!

Announcements for Week Ending February 6th, 2016

February 7 is the last Sunday to bring Epiphany gifts for Primavera.  Let's fill the gold treasure chest in the back of the church to overflowing with new socks, gloves, caps, and underwear, and new or gently used warm outer clothing, blankets, sleeping bags, etc.  "Gently used"?  If you would be willing to wear it yourself, it's gently used.  Thanks to all for sharing with our brothers and sisters.

I would like to thank the parishioners of St Michael's for their overwhelming generosity. I have taken several carloads of warm clothing, new sox, underwear, toiletries, blankets to Primavera. The items have been very much appreciated.  Thank you all again.  ~   Diane Tyron.

Countdown to Guatemala.  Coordinator Ila Abernathy leaves Feb. 22, to be joined Feb. 23 by Vestry rep Reed Karaim and RN from Southside Presbyterian Dorothy Chao (and, of course, Fr. Smith and Terri, already in country).  Another non-parishioner is in the wings.  We'd like one or two
more parishioners if possible.  Return can be March 2 or March 10.  Pick up the basic "call" in the back of the church, or contact Ila at 623-3063, ilaa@mindspring.com.  Add this adventure to your joyful (and meaningful) Lenten discipline.

Budgets are moral documents as well as financial ones.  If the proposed Arizona State budget concerns you, the Social Action Committee urges you to express your opinion.  One of the major controversies is the proposal for 2,000 new private prison beds, which will be presented to the legislature on February 2.   Call Governor Ducey and other officials. (602-542-4331)  More information is available in the back of the church.

The room where St. Alban's meets is a yoga studio during the week.

Terri Smith has been posting lots of pictures on Facebook. Here are a few of them, with her comments:

This is the entrance to the room where the church is that John now preaches at. It's an old convent dated back to the 17th century. It's a beautiful building.

Our new bed is in and made with the lovely quilt the ECW women had made for John and I as a wedding present 5 years ago. The rain waited until the bed was in!

Parish Directory Update!

Hi, folks!  The time has come to take fresh pictures and update contact info for the Parish Directory.
You can get the current outdated directory at: http://directory.instantchurchdirectory.com/73907083/churchdirectory.pdf.

The password to open it is AngelMike602.

Karen Blocher will be available to take your photo in the Parish Center after all morning masses this Sunday, May 3rd, and on Sunday, May 10th, and after the 12:30 PM and 5 PM Masses on May 10th only. You may submit your own digital photo if you prefer. Please let us know if you wish to opt out of the photos or the directory.

The updating our directory is is an essential part of our transition process.  Without one, we would be unable to gain everyone's input in our self-study, and sending potential applicants away.

Please plan on taking a few minutes on one of these Sundays to help us with this task. Thanks!

IN MEMORIAM: STEVE COULTER

Some of you may know that our faithful driver for Casa Maria, Steve Coulter passed away on July 31st. Steve recruited volunteer drivers and proposed a yearly schedule to share the delivery responsibility so lunches would be arrive at Casa Maria promptly. Steve also served as Junior Warden at St. Michael's for many years, keeping the buildings sound and dry and the landscaping beautiful!

Steve was scheduled to deliver the lunches to Casa Maria this Friday. We are blessed that his loving and caring wife Jill has taken upon herself to do what Steve would have done. Thanks to Jill, to Steve and to God!

Steve's life will be celebrated on Saturday Sept 13th, 11 AM at St. Michael and all Angels Church.

PS. If you would like to lighten the load by becoming a driver once or twice a year, please let us know and we will add you to the schedule!

PARISH LIFE: AN ITALIAN NIGHT BEFORE OUR GREEK NIGHT!

Maria is working three jobs in order to keep their family afloat.  They are behind three months in their house payments.  The lunch is a free will offering.  The suggested donation is $5.  (Checks may be made out to Mision San Miguel with "Maria" place in the memo.)  Lunch will be served from 11 AM until 3 PM in the Parish Center.
