The Wednesday Adult Education Class is beginning a new topic. We  are using Professor Charles Mathewes’ lecture course entitled “Why Evil Exists.”  Prof. Mathewes, a professor of religious studies at the University of Virginia (and an Episcopalian) discusses approaches to the problem of evil beginning with ancient Babylonian creation myths through the end of the 20th century.  The class meets Wednesdays at 10 am in the Womble Library.  You are invited to join us.

Wanted!  St. Michael's children for Chapel Rock Summer Camp! St. Michael's families for Family Camp! Check it out online at chapelrock.net/camps.  The children's and youth camps run monthly during the month of June. Family camp runs July 7-10. Migrant Sunday May 29:   Sermon, socks, water, pupusas! 

Reverend John Fife, Pastor Emeritus of Southside Presbyterian Church, will preach. Become a good Samaritan by bringing in water...gallon jugs and 24-pack pints...as well as new cotton socks. Migrants in the desert need your help as the temperatures begin to climb! The risk of dying from dehydration and from blisters is high. On the same day, the Social Action Committee will organize our annual filling of snack packs for the Samaritan desert walkers' distribution to migrants. And at coffee hour, a Guatemalan family of nine, who fled their home and have applied for political asylum, will sell their home made pupusas. Please come with your appetite and help the Ortega family. 

Taizé Service will be held on Tuesday,  May 17th. You are invited to join us for forty five minutes of prayer, scripture readings and music.  Just a perfect way to spend your early evening time.  Bring a friend!

Bishop Smith has designated next Sunday, April 10, as Alleluia Fund Sunday throughout the Diocese. On that day, churches and parishioners are asked to support the Alleluia Fund for the important work of planting new Episcopal congregations in Arizona, as well as supporting existing congregations with special grants to help them grow. Please prayerfully consider this opportunity. March 17th ~ POZ Café Luncheon.

St. Michael's is once again participating with 2 other churches and TIHAN in putting on the March 17th POZ Café luncheon. We have been asked to donate 40 rolls of paper towels, 80 boxes of Kleenex, and 320 disposable razors. These items will be put in the care packages that are given out at the luncheon. The razors and Kleenex can be purchased at the Dollar Tree for a dollar. Please help us fill up the chest in the back of the church. Cash donations to buy these items are also welcome. We need 6 volunteers to help the day of the luncheon, March 17th; time is 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. Guatemala Countdown: Is this the fast that I choose? What happens with Lenten discipline in a country where, for much of the rural indigenous population, almost every day is a fast not of their choosing? This much I can say: It's not about food. Isaiah 58:6-12, frequently quoted, adds (v.10), "If you pour yourself out for the hungry / and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, / then shall your light rise in the darkness /and your gloom be as the noonday." I leave tomorrow for Guatemala, joined by RN Dorothy Chao of Samaritans (second Project trip) and RN Lahna Chaffee of Green Valley. We’ll travel with Fr. Smith and Terri to Nebaj to meet local health workers and distribute supplies (among other activities). Dorothy and I will continue with health promoters to more remote communities, while Fr. Smith, Terri, and Lahna head for his church in Antigua. We will keep you posted.

What you can do: Right now, include prayers "For Travelers" (BCP p. 831), "For the Oppressed" (p. 826), and "For Towns and Rural Areas" (p. 825) in your Lenten devotions. Just add "and other lands" everywhere the prayers say "this land," and after "especially," add "those in the Ixil Area." Think about joining us, even for a few days, in May and June. -- Ila Abernathy

St. Michael’s Annual Parish Meeting will take place

SUNDAY, JANUARY 24 ~ 9 AM DURING MASS.

There will two elections:
1. Election of the Vestry: Endorsement of a proposal to retain all current members and the addition of a member from Mision San Miguel.
2. Election of delegates to the Diocesan Convention.

The above is in addition to the usual Wardens’, Head of School, Committee reports and a report from the Nominating Committee on the transition process by Ohia Hodges.

PLEASE NOTE: committee reports need to be submitted to Karen at the church office (mavarin2@gmail.com) by Monday, January 18th to be included in our annual report to the Parish!

Following Mass, a “Festive Brunch” will be served by Chef Andy Bruno in the Smith Parish Center. (Donations will be graciously accepted to defray the cost of the food.)

This is an important Mass and meeting for all St. Michael’s Parishioners to attend and recap the year of 2015 and move expectantly, prayerfully and joyfully into the New Year of 2016.

(Please note:  there will be only one Mass that day.)

St. Michael’s Parish Day School Open House.

Episcopal schools throughout the USA have a tradition of excellence in education in a setting that promotes diversity, academics, and spiritual growth.  If you have or know children who will be in grades K-5 in the coming year, it’s not too early to save the date, Wednesday, January 13th for the St. Michael’s Open House campus event located at 602 N. Help us fill the Epiphany Trunk!

Epiphany Gifts for Primavera.  During the 5 Sundays of Epiphany, please fill the treasure chest in the back of the Church with NEW socks and underwear, toiletries, and new or gently used gloves, hats or caps, sweatshirts, jackets, sweaters, blankets, and other clothing in good condition for distribution to Tucson’s homeless population by Primavera and other programs. Socks and warm outer wear are always critical. What do we mean by "gently used"? If you would be willing to wear the garment yourself without embarrassment, it’s good to give. Last day of collection will be February 7. Thanks to Diane and Joe Tyron for delivering your donations as you fill the chest to overflowing.

NEW BIBLE STUDY CLASS

A note from Fr. Richard!

I am beginning a weekly Lectionary Bible Study. There are two sessions. ONE meets at 10:00 am on Thursday mornings and the other will meet at 6:30 pm on Wednesday.  Each class is 90 minutes and will take place in the Parish Center.

We will be using the magnificent and extraordinarily creative Bible Workbench approach that is replete with top notch scholarship, penetrating questions, poetry and wise musings to engage the biblical narrative.  If you plan to attend, sign-up sheets are in back of church so the proper number of packets may be ordered (or call the Parish Office).

CANDY MAKING COMING SOON!

Mark your calendars!  We will be making Angel Food Candy beginning Monday, November 2 through Friday morning, November 6.  On Monday we will need crews for dipping and patting, and for opening boxes, and setting up the packing stations.  The rest of the week, will need crews for dipping and packing.  Please help if you can, even if only for a few hours one day.  New angel food makers are particularly welcome.  We will teach you what to do!  If you have questions, please see Peter Schmidt, Dorothy Cameron, Pat Miller or Sherry Terrell.

BACKPACKS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR “GIFTS OF LOVE” PROGRAM:  We need your help! ICS is collecting school supplies through Monday, July 20, to help children go back to school with the supplies they need. Our families are struggling to provide the basics of food and shelter for their children; paying for school supplies can be a challenge. 

Transition Updates from the Vestry of St. Michael and All Angels   Vestry’s Report on Transition #2 from the Vestry of St. Michael and All Angels 26 May 2015 Bishop Kirk Smith urged the Vestry to inform the entire parish on the state of our transition process as we move forward to provide calm and build trust.      Our transition begins with thanking Fr. John Smith for his faithful service in the past twenty years. The preparation for the send-off on 28 June, led by Mo. Clare Yarborough, is well underway. If you have not received the information on the send-off, please notify the Parish Office immediately.       Nomination for the Nominating Committee closed on 10 May. Of the 27 nominees, 19 accepted their nomination. The Vestry has started interviewing them in the hope of selecting 8 plus 2 Vestry members to form the 10-member committee by 14 June. The Nominating Committee’s first task is to listen to your opinions and views on the future of this Parish.      The Vestry has also met with one candidate for the Interim Rector, and it is in discernment before further actions.      As the Vestry prayerfully discerns, please say your prayers so not be led into temptation to figure out who the nominees are, and to second-guess the Vestry’s decisions. Succumbing to any temptation is to be delivered to evil, which breaks trust, degrades love and shatters hope.  Keep on praying and let God be our guide.Thank you for your trust. Taizé is held Tuesday September 2nd in the church at 6:45PM Come to Taize service of Prayer, Readings and Meditation. All are invited to join is in this quiet and peaceful 45 minutes as the day closes.

Many thanks to all those who continue to generously donate to the small Central American children traveling with their mothers. The numbers of recent border crossers have declined considerably. Give to the Florence Project to ensure that unaccompanied immigrant children have legal support a they face immigration judges. About 500 of these children are still detained in Arizona on any given day. There is no public defender system in immigration. The Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project is the only organization that provides free legal services to unaccompanied children, along with the thousands of men and women, who are detained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Arizona. The staff from the Florence Project are available to speak with churches who want to assist unaccompanied children with social and legal services. IN MEMORIAM: STEVE COULTER

Some of you may know that our faithful driver for Casa Maria, Steve Coulter passed away on July 31st. Steve recruited volunteer drivers and proposed a yearly schedule to share the delivery responsibility so lunches would be arrive at Casa Maria promptly. Steve also served as Junior Warden at St. Michael's for many years, keeping the buildings sound and dry and the landscaping beautiful!

Steve was scheduled to deliver the lunches to Casa Maria this Friday. We are blessed that his loving and caring wife Jill has taken upon herself to do what Steve would have done. Thanks to Jill, to Steve and to God!

Steve's life will be celebrated on Saturday Sept 13th, 11 AM at St. Michael and all Angels Church.

PS. If you would like to lighten the load by becoming a driver once or twice a year, please let us know and we will add you to the schedule!  

PARISH LIFE: AN ITALIAN NIGHT BEFORE OUR GREEK NIGHT!

Please note:  The Parish Life gathering at Fronimo's has been changed to THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28TH AT 6:30.

THIS THURSDAY.....AUGUST 28, Parish life invites you to Viro's Real Italian Bakery, 8301 East 22nd Street, at 6:30 pm.  A special Spaghetti Dinner will be served.  Cost is $7 per person.  Join us for good food, lively conversation and fellowship. SUNDAY FUNDRAISER: A MEXICAN LUNCH!

This Sunday, after the 10:15 am Mass, you are invited to a Mexican Lunch of chicken enchilada, beans and rice. The meal is prepared by Maria, a member of Mision San Miguel, to raise money for past-due house payments.  Several months ago, Maria's husband fell from a roof and broke eight ribs and his spine in three places and is unable to work.  They have three children and their son was confirmed here last year. Maria is working three jobs in order to keep their family afloat.  They are behind three months in their house payments.  The lunch is a free will offering.  The suggested donation is $5.  (Checks may be made out to Mision San Miguel with "Maria" place in the memo.)  Lunch will be served from 11 AM until 3 PM in the Parish Center. All are invited!

Guatemala News: Ila and other volunteers have made it safely to Guatemala and got started right away, procuring badly needed medical supplies for Maya villages. Meanwhile, Father Smith and Terri have made it safely to Guatemala for a 10-day vacation. Follow the Smiths' adventures on heir blog, Sojourns With Steve.

The Burial Mass for Lorene Paschal has been set for Saturday, June 28 at the 8:30. Burial will take place here at St. Michael’s. A Reception will follow the committal. May Lorene’s soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. †
