Migrant Sunday May 29:   Sermon, socks, water, pupusas!
Reverend John Fife, Pastor Emeritus of Southside Presbyterian Church, will preach. Become a good Samaritan by bringing in water...gallon jugs and 24-pack pints...as well as new cotton socks. Migrants in the desert need your help as the temperatures begin to climb! The risk of dying from dehydration and from blisters is high. On the same day, the Social Action Committee will organize our annual filling of snack packs for the Samaritan desert walkers' distribution to migrants. And at coffee hour, a Guatemalan family of nine, who fled their home and have applied for political asylum, will sell their home made pupusas . Please come with your appetite and help the Ortega family.

Peace and many Blessings,
Nancy

A Religious Response to Climate Change – II: Living

Thank you for joining us for "A Religious Response to Climate Change: Learning" held at St Michael and All Angels Parish in Tucson on October 4th. Please join us if you can - and bring friends! - to the followup session, "A Religious Response to Climate Change II: Living" to be held at St Michael's on Saturday, December 13th, 9am-2pm. All are welcome!
A Religious Response to Climate Change – II: Living
Advent, Stewardship, and Metanoia
The Episcopal Parish of Saint Michael and All Angels
602 North Wilmot Road, Tucson, Arizona 85711
Saturday, December 13, 2014, 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Mass (optional) at 8:30 AM & lunch at 12:00 PM (free-will offering)
“We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways.” – Enriching Our Worship, Eucharistic Prayer
“On November 2nd the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which represents mainstream scientific opinion, said that it was extremely likely that climate change is the product of human activity... Many factors influence the climate but perhaps the single most important is carbon dioxide (CO)… At the start of the industrial revolution, in about 1800, there were 280 parts per million (ppm) of CO in the atmosphere. That had been the level for most of human history. This year, however, concentrations exceeded 400 ppm, the first time it had reached that level for a million years. Most of the increase has been caused by people burning fossil fuels.” – The Economist, November 2, 2014.
How do we respond to the realities of climate change with an eye to stewardship of earth’s resources and responsible changes in practice? In other words, given what we have learned, how are we now to live?
As we seek to make an informed religious response to climate change, we come together to discuss and discern plausible actions. In this follow-up to our first forum on climate change (October 4th), we will seek practices for sustainable living, related to food, water, and energy.
We will be invited into theological reflection on the spiritual context for environmental action by The Rev. John R. Smith, The Rev. Nadine Martin, and The Rev. Dr. John R. Leech.
  • What does it mean to have stewardship of all our natural resources?
  • What change of direction (metanoia) is needed for sustainable living?
We will be listening to presentations on challenges of sustainable living from:
  • Alexander D. Cronin, Associate Professor, Department of Physics and College of Optical Sciences, University of Arizona.
  • Margot Garcia, Professor Emeritus, Department of Urban and Regional Studies and Planning, Virginia Commonwealth University.
  • Taralynn Reynolds, Population and Sustainability Organizer, Center for Biological Diversity.
The presenters will address questions concerning energy, water and food in terms of:
  • What is a “sustainable world”?
  • What are the current levels and rate of consumption?
  • What are the effects of current consumption, especially on energy, water and soil?
  • What are the means to change the current trends and where are we in this change?
Our speakers will participate in a moderated panel discussion after their presentations.
Moderator of the panel: Ke Chiang Hsieh, Professor Emeritus of Physics, University of Arizona. Senior Warden, St. Michael & All Angels Parish.
Host: The Rev. John R. SmithRector, St. Michael & All Angels Parish.
RSVP by calling (520) 886-7292, Monday through Thursday, or e-mail to church@stmichael.net, no later than December 8th.  Please leave your name, your affiliation, and the number of people planning to come with you.  http://smallangelstucson.org/ https://www.facebook.com/smallangelstucson

Announcements through September 14

Doug Leightenheimer’s organ recital at the U of A last April will be broadcast on 90.5 classical radio on this Sunday, September 8 at 3 PM and Thursday, September 12, at 9 PM (not AM as previously posted). If you missed the recital, here is a chance to hear Doug at his best.

Women’s Bible Study begins on Wednesday, September 11th at 6:30 PM in the Parish Center. This year we will study one of the most courageous women in the Bible: Esther. We will explore the history and see how this can apply to us today. Books can be purchased ahead of time in the Parish Office at a cost of $15. If you cannot afford the book, but still want to come, please do. The cost will be covered. Sign-up Sheets are located in the back of church.

You are invited to join us for Bible Study each Wednesday morning, beginning September 4th at 10 am in the Womble Library. The Bible Study will be facilitated by Peter Schmidt. Come with your ideas, suggestions and what you would like to learn so we can tailor-make this informal class best suited to everyone. Join us and bring a friend. All are welcome.

Were you here in the early days of St. Michael's, or even in the middle years as the church was expanded and the current organ was first purchased? Karen Blocher would love to include your St. Michael's memories in our special 60th Anniversary issue of The Messenger, coming out later this month. If you have a special memory to share, write it out (a single paragraph is fine) and either email it to Karen at mavarin2@gmail.com or drop it off in the church office. Or if you have one to share and don't want to write it yourself, tell your story to Karen at Coffee Hour today after the 10:15 AM Mass. Let's make this 60th Anniversary Michaelmas a great celebration of this wonderful place! Old photos and other documents from the early days are also welcome, to add to the church archive.

We are updating the church website and putting together a booklet with all the different ministries here at St. Michael's, from Altar Guild and Godly Play to Deacon's Shoebox and the Meals program, from Taize to POZ Cafe. If you are involved in any of these groups, please note that we need a brief description of each, when it meets and what you do. THANK YOU!

Women's Bible Study and Casa Maria Reminder

Women’s Bible Study starts Sept. 11th at 6:30 in the Parish Center. It is that time of year again to start thinking about our next women’s bible study. This year we are going to study one of the most courageous women in the bible: Esther. If you ever felt inadequate or pushed into situations that seemed overpowering, this study is for you. It was tough being a woman in Esther’s day. We will explore the history and see how this can apply to us today. Books can be purchased ahead of time in the church office at a cost of $15. If you cannot afford the book, but still want to come, please do. The cost will be covered. There is always room for one more!

Announcements for Week Ending on July 22nd

St. Michael’s Sunday School of Theology continues Sundays at 9 AM in the Womble Library. Right now we are watching Jesus and the Gospels, a series of lectures of DVD by Prof. Luke Timothy Johnson a former Benedictine monk and former teacher at Yale Divinity School. The course places the writing of the Gospels in the literary, religious, cultural and historical context of first century Palestine and the Greco-Roman world. All are welcome to watch these videos and join in the lively discussions that follow.

√ The summer is hot and the need is great. St. Michael’s Food Pantry is running low on: peanut butter, juices, fruit, tuna fish, pork and beans and cereal. We continue to be grateful for your generous donations to the pantry for those less fortunate. Donate only if your circumstances will allow. Thank You.

Come celebrate midsummer on July 25, 2012 at 6:30 PM in the Parish Center, with our Bookkeeper’s Bash Midsummer Meal! Help our bookkeeper, Karen Blocher, celebrate her first year and hundred-plus pounds lost on her diet and exercise program. The Midsummer Meal will feature lean meat, grilled vegetables, a special salad and fruit for dessert, prepared by Chef Andy Bruno. Suggested donation is $12.50. Any money left over goes to “Faith Promise” to help with the church’s day-to-day expenses.

TIHAN’S next volunteer orientation will take place Wednesday, July 25th at Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (2331 East Adams, near Speedway and Tucson Blvd.) TIHAN’S Volunteer Orientation is a great way to learn more about HIV/AIDS, TIHAN and our current volunteer opportunities, and how you can help make a difference in our community. It is also your first step to becoming a volunteer with TIHAN. The cost of the orientation is $17 per person (scholarships are available). If you are interested in attending or if you would like more information, please contact us at 299-6647 or volunteercoordinator@tihan.org.
