A Prayer for Rescue, Recovery, Rebuilding

0 gracious God, we will never understand the sorrows of the world, but by your grace, we will not turn away from them. Cheer and encourage those who labor to help the injured, the homeless, the hungry, and those in despair. Bless and soften the hearts of those who would take advantage of tragedy for their own profit, that they may come to know where true joy is to be found We ask these things in your own most holy Name. Amen.

Update will be late!

Hi, folks. Because I'll be out of town this weekend, I picked up a copy of the church bulletin this afternoon so that I could update the schedule page and this blog / news page. Then I promptly lost the bulletin! So I won't be able to update until Tuesday night. The church office is closed on Monday for Labor Day, but should reopen Tuesday. And of course, you can pick up a paper bulletin at church this weekend.

I apologize for any inconvenience!

Social Concerns Notes

Help for SAMARITANS - Sunday Sept. 11th.

In February Social Concerns agreed to supply food packs for migrants in distress twice a year, to be distributed by Samaritans - and it's time!

The plan: prepare 150 ziplock packs of durable, nutritious stuff during Coffee Hour after 10 AM Mass. Last time we did 130 packs in less than 1/2 hour!

Bring in any of the items listed below. There'll be a box in the back of the church. Social Concerns will also buy in bulk to round out your donations, just get good buys.

Advance purchase - Bargains only!
  • granola or nutrition bars
  • small packs of nuts
  • tuna, beans, Vienna sausage pull top cans
  • individual packs of fruit or applesauce
  • small nutritious candies (ones that don't melt)
  • other durable, nutritious snacks, small packs

You don't have to have a final opinion on border issues to feed the hungry - and some of these very humble people, including women and children, haven't eaten for days.

You know the heart of a stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.- Exodus 23:9

GOOD NEWS:
Part of the proceeds of the English Faire will go toward building houses in Haiti, through a Food for the Poor program carefully researched by Joel Williams. We'll supplement with the Special Collection Oct. 22nd. A generous parishioner overheard plans last Sunday and offered a $500 match. The modest block houses cost $2000. Let's try for two - or more!

Campus Ministry Meal Sunday evenings - Social Concerns will cover one of St. Michael's September dates. Call Ila if you'd like to help.

ER-D rep (formerly Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief) The Rev. Lucie Thomas of St. Andrew's in Nogales is the new Diocesan coordinator and wants to elevate the important work of ER-D. Any volunteers to be Parish rep? Call Peggy Van Norman for details.

Advent International Bazaar Dec. 3rd & 4th. Call Ila to reserve a spot OR to help.

COMMUNITY REMINDERS

Prayer Vigil at El Tiradito shrine Monday, August 29th, 5 p.m., with national religious leaders coming for a border "plunge" at Rick Ufford Chase's invitation (Rick is Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly and also a founder of BorderLinks). The visitors include Jewish leaders and representatives of the World Council of Churches. They'll join us for prayers for migrants at 5 p.m. El Tiradito is on Main Avenue just West of Cushing Street, close to Carrillo school.

Presentation August 31st - "The Effects of Free Trade on Indigenous Communities," with Miguel Pickard, visiting from Chiapas. Potluck 6 PM, Armory Park (enter, 220 S. Fifth Avenue. Bring a dish to share, $5 suggested donation. Pickard is Co-Founder of the Center for Economic and Political Research for Community Action [CIEPAC], lives and works in Chiapas. He is bilingual. Derechos Humanos sponsors. Why attend? Economic and cultural impacts of "Free" Trade affect migration, and many Mexican migrants are Maya from Chiapas, one of the poorest states in Mexico. A new Free Trade Treaty has been approved with Central America and could affect the Mayan communities with whom we collaborate in Guatemala.

The Tailey Family (Liberian refugees)
“It takes a village . . .” and we’re it!

Josephine and her friend Naomi are going to Chapel Rock
, July 3rd-9th. Thanks to your regular donations to Social Concerns, we are able to pay for Episcopal summer camp for Josephine and her 12 year old friend Naomi, also a Liberian refugee. Naomi is giving Josephine the courage to try this new venture. Camp also gives Josephine a week’s respite from being “second mom” to her nephews. Her burning question: “Will there be pizza?”

Camp needs - One of the Parish’s many “honorary grandmothers” will take the girls shopping for basic camp needs, but we’d like to BORROW 2 light or medium-weight sleeping bags. If you can help with this or donate 2 beach towels, flashlights, nalgene water bottles, or children’s Bibles, please call Georgianna.

Eric received an excellent report from his pre kindergarten teacher. He’s looking forward to joining a Parks “build a dinosaur” project arranged by yet another Parish “grandmother.”

Mom Helena has now held a job at Canyon Ranch for 15 months. She also attends basic language / education classes 4 evenings a week, depending upon transportation and weariness. She has never been to school before, and the school routine, combined with her being a single mom, illiterate, and working, is difficult for her. She is now having to pay $400 per month for part of daycare, so there’s no extra cash.

Josephine will take African dance classes with Barbea Williams, thanks to another “grandmother.”

Tailey support team needs rides to/from church once per month (call Sue); male role model for Eric, rides to/from evening classes, 5-7 PM (call Gail); babysitting, and other rides (Gail).

Thanks to the “village” team: Gail, Georgianna, Ila, Joel, Joyce, Karen, Mary, Proscovia, Shigeko, Sue, YOU! Call Gail to help the group.

Web Update

The music page has just been updated, with new pictures and a mention of Sunday's organ rededication and concert. I should have at two new pieces for the Arts blog this week (a tour of the organ loft and a new poem by Kevin Harrington), so be sure to stop back for those. And Father Smith promises to have pictures from his pilgrimage available for uploading soon. I'm really looking forward to seeing them - and I suspect you are, too!

I think there's something else coming, too. Now, what was it?
