Concert Reminder and Update

Our Thanksgiving Concert in honor of A.F. Schultz is Saturday, April 26, at 2:30 PM in the Church. The concert features Trumpeter Mary Elizabeth Bowden of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and our own Douglas Leightenheimer at the Organ. Please come and invite your friends! This promises to be a very special event in the history of the parish.

 

 

Mary Elizabeth Bowden has arrived in Tucson for this weekend's concert, and has already made an impact here. On Thursday morning, Mary and Alan played together at the Upper School Mass, after which her trumpet could be heard across the St. Michael campus (at least as far as the church office!). On Thursday afternoon, Mary Elizabeth Bowden presented a Master Class at the University of Arizona. Busy day!

Keith and Elizabeth Hege are hosting a special party/reception with Mary Elizabeth Bowden at their home 6:30 PM Friday evening. Then Saturday is the concert!

 

The free concert is to be held in thanksgiving to God for enabling us to retire the loan for our Æolian-Skinner organ and establish an endowment for its upkeep in the name of Alan F. Schultz. May it be known as the “A. F. Schultz Organ” in gratitude for Alan’s ministry of teaching in our parish school and his talented musicianship at St. Michael’s, St. Mark’s, and throughout Tucson!For more information, please check out our Schultz Organ page. Easter Week will culminate in a special concert with Trumpeter Mary Elizabeth Bowden and organist Doug Leightenheimer, in celebration of the naming of the A. F. Schultz Organ. Bring your friends and neighbors!

The free concert will be in thanksgiving to God for enabling us to retire the loan for our Æolian-Skinner organ and establish an endowment for its upkeep in the name of Alan F. Schultz. May it be known as the “Schultz Organ” in gratitude for Alan’s ministry of teaching in our parish school and his talented musicianship at St. Michael’s, St. Mark’s, and throughout Tucson! Alan has also be involved with Tucson Civic Chorus (now the Tucson Masterworks Chorale) and the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra.

A member of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, trumpeter Mary Elizabeth Bowden has performed with the Baltimore Symphony, Fairfax Symphony, Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, New World Symphony, Virginia Symphony and Santa Fe Opera, and at Colorado’s Breckenridge Music Festival. The First Prize winner of the 2012 International Women’s Brass Conference Trumpet Competition, she is co-founder of Florida’s Chrysalis Chamber Players, a recipient of a Yale Alumni Grant, and has collaborated in chamber music programs at the Marlboro Music Festival, The Banff Centre and at the Sydney Opera House.

In addition to being the music director and organist at St. Michael’s, Douglas Blair Leightenheimer is a second year doctoral student at the University of Arizona music department. For fifteen years he was director of music for First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, NC, also serving as music director for the Schola Cantorum of the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina. He was recently heard on KUAT radio as it broadcast his April 2013 recital, the Mildred Flood Mahoney Memorial Organ Series Concert at the University of Arizona.

Feast of the Annunciation to Our Lady

Dear Friends:

Two Sundays ago I was so happy to announce that the final loan payment for St. Michael’s Aeolian Skinner Organ was made. This effort to provide the church with a fine instrument for worship took over 20 years and the dedication of many people to accomplish! The acquisition, transport, refurbishment, architectural accommodation and installation cost over $1.2 million dollars! Solo Deo Gratia!

I am so happy to announce that the Vestry, upon completion of this goal, and the recommendation of many, has decided to dedicate the parish organ to Alan F. Schultz. Alan is such a worthy person to associate with this wonderful instrument which enhances, like nothing else, our worship of God! As a loved and respected teacher of English at St. Michael’s School for over 30 years who has trained students in writing, declamation, and public speaking and provided music for our school masses until this day, Alan has enriched the lives of thousands of students and their teachers over the years. Alan has served our parish as its organist for many years and composed Masses and other pieces for special occasions. Alan has shared his talent of musical composition and performance with the wider community through the Southern Arizona Community Orchestra, where he remains Conductor Emeritus, and the Tucson Masterworks Chorale. Alan also had an important role in bringing the Aeolian Skinner organ to St. Michael and All Angels over 20 years ago. May our instrument be called “The Schultz Organ!”

We want to insure the proper upkeep and maintenance of this fine instrument for generations of worshippers to come. To this end, we will establish “The Alan F. Schultz Endowment for the Organ.” Our initial goal will be $120,000. Quietly, we already have received over $14,000 in cash and over $30,000 in pledges toward the goal. We have $76,000 to reach our goal.

With joy and thanksgiving will you help with a pledge or gift to this special endowment in Alan Schultz’s honor? Pledges can be paid over four years. Reminders will be sent out early September in time for the annual Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, September 29th. All pledges and/or gifts will receive special recognition. All Book of Pipes contributions, once placed on the principal of the loans, will now be placed in the endowment. Once the corpus of the Schultz endowment is established, the earnings will accrue to be used to maintain the organ, providing good stewardship for the care of this instrument for years to come!

Announcements through October 13

Join us Sunday, October 20 and celebrate Episcopal School Sunday. St. Michael’s students will be serving at Mass and offering musical additions to the Mass. Following the morning Masses, there will be a delicious Pancake Breakfast ~ cooked and served by our Boy Scouts under the direction of Byron Brandon and John Madsen.

St. Michael's at Diocesan Convention
The annual Episcopal Diocese of Arizona Convention is at the Sheraton Crescent Hotel in Phoenix October 18-19. Former Presiding Bishop the Most Reverend Frank Griswold is the keynote speaker and calls his address "Listening with the Ear of the Heart." He will also conduct workshops on "Spiritual Practice: the narrow door to discovery and growth."

St. Michael's delegates are Proscovia King, Pat Meyers, Paulette O'Malley, Terri Smith and Joyce Tracy. Attending clergy are Fr. Smith, Mother Clare, Fr. Jorge, Fr. Reed and Deacon Michael.

Guatemala Project will have a display / sale table in the Exhibition Hall. Selected textiles for purchase and information about the Guatemala Project available.

Members of St. Michael’s Chamber Players are gifted professional musicians who have individually performed with many orchestras locally, across the U.S. and the world.

• Alexander Lipay, flute, is a graduate of Thornton School of Music (USC), has performed as soloist widely in the US, France and Russia, and is Principal Flutist of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra since 2006.

• Alexander Tentser, piano, received his piano education at the Russian Music Academy in Moscow. He has appeared with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra as guest soloist.

• Anna Gendler, violin, is a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory in Russia, and has been a member of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra since 1991.

• Melissa Hamilton, viola, is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, and currently performs with the Tucson Symphony and the Tucson Chamber Artists.

E.C.W ANNUAL CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON - will take place on Wednesday, December 10 at 10:30 am in the Parish Center. All women of the parish are invited. ECW QUILT RAFFLE - The ECW handmade quilt raffle has been moved to the English Tea on Saturday May 9, 2009. This gorgeous quilt may be seen in the church office. Tickets are on sale.

NOVEL THEOLOGY - The next meeting of our book club, Novel Theology, is on Thursday December 4th at 6:30 pm. We are reading March, a story of the civil war written by Geraldine Brooks. Our gathering will be held at Sally Creswell’s house. Books and study guides are provided! We welcome newcomers. Join us for lively discussion and good company. St. Michael’s Angel Food - Don’t forget your “Angel Food” for last minute Christmas gifts in an attractive gift-ready box. TAIZE PRAYER SERVICE - Taize Ecumenical Prayer Evenings continue at 7 PM on First Friday’s at Our Mother of Sorrows Parish, 1800 S. Kolb Road. The prayer service is for reconciliation, healing and unity among Christians. Congregants from many churches in the city make up the Taize-style prayer community over these past few months. The Taize-style prayer services brings about a unique gift of spiritual ecumenism. The next Taize prayer service is Friday December 5th at 7 PM.

HOLIDAY GREENS - St. Michael’s Angels Parent Organization is excited to announce their annual Holiday Evergreen Fundraiser. Brochures and order blanks are in the back of church. Simply complete the form and return it to the church office with payment. Please know that $10 – $12.00 per wreath comes back to St. Michael’s Day School!

A HUGE THANK YOU to our volunteers at our St. Michael’s School/Food Pantry last week. We filled our Food Pantry and storage room in less than two hours. A special thank you to Rick and Milt who filled the storage room with the help of students. The ladies (plus Bob) did a wonderful job filling the pantry and guiding the students in the front of the school. Our endeavor was completely successful.

ANGEL TREE Giving 2008 - Angel Tree tags are now available for pick-up from the Christmas Tree at the back of church. Please be sure to sign the sheet on the usher’s table so that we will know what children’s names have been taken. This year we have 35 children and will also be buying groceries for Christmas baskets for several of the families. I appreciate all the donations you have made in the past for the Angel Tree project. This year I need all the gifts returned to the office or brought to the tree no later than Wednesday, December 17th.

Please remember to include the tags for return if any of the items are the wrong size or color. Most stores will give these when the gift is purchased. For any of you who would like to participate but are unable to shop, let me know and I will be glad to take care of it for you.

LAST CALL for Fr. Smith’s “shoe box” charity project. Shoe boxes are still available this weekend at the back of church with a list inside with suggestions of what is needed to fill them. Just fill and wrap the boxes (the top lid wrapped and separated from the box) and return to the church office no later than Tuesday, December 2, 2008.

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS - the special beauty of St. Michael’s Christmas worship is the work of many people. Not all can be directly involved, but all can contribute to the Christmas Flowers and Decorations. Please use the Christmas Flowers envelope for floral donations.
