Announcements for Week Ending 11/12/16

White crosses around the altar at the back of church remember 24 of 144 undocumented persons, most unidentified, whose remains were recovered in the Arizona desert during fiscal 2016. Others lie undiscovered in the desert, leaving families in anguish and uncertainty.  The crosses were carried in pilgrimage from St. John’s Church, Ajo Road at 12th Ave. to the San Xavier Mission on October  29.  We thank the colición de Derechos Humanos for entrusting the crosses to St. Michael’s until November 7.

Our guest this Sunday, November 5th, is the Rev. Elizabeth Smith of Holy Way Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Smith coordinates a volunteer visitation program at the Eloy Detention Center. She will speak after the 10:15 am Solemn Mass, and will help us learn ways that we can offer solace and support for women and men who are detained and awaiting Immigration Court. Please join us.

ECW/WM will meet in the Parish Center on November 16.  We will begin the meeting at 10:30 AM. Please  bring an item or two for our Food Pantry. Our speaker will be Jill LaBrie, who will speak to us about the CASA Program. Please join us for ECW business, an interesting speaker, and fellowship.

We are now collecting unwanted and gently used items for the Trinket Table at the International Bazaar to be held on December 3rd and 4th.  All proceeds will go to the Social Action Committee, helping to defray the costs of the bazaar. Bring your donations to the church office.

Plan now to help with Ten Thousand Villages at St. Michael’s International Holiday Bazaar, December 3 and 4th.  Sponsored by Social Action Committee, “Villages” is the anchor group, included not only to serve craft communities in developing but also to attract the public through variety and name recognition.  We are the only place in Arizona where you can “shop the village”.  More visitors mean more purchases for small local groups, as well. We need a roster of folk to help with set-up and to sit the Villages display in two-hour rotations. To help, contact Ila Abernathy, 623-3063, ilaa@mindspring.com

As you probably already know, there will be no Sunday services on October 18 due to the termite fumigation. So we are asking everyone to attend one of our sister Episcopal parishes here in Tucson.
For the assignment, each family or person should write down one positive aspect experienced or observed in the church visited on a 3x5 card provided by us this Sunday, October 11.  Please provide the name of the church you attend as the heading on your card.

You will find these 3x5 cards in the pews and at the back of the church. We will have a marked basket at the back of the church designated for the collection of the completed cards on Sunday, October 25.

Your help with this mission will be greatly appreciated

Annual Fowler Fund Appeal Sunday

Sunday, October 11, 2015, is also Fowler Fund Sunday. It is the one Sunday each year in which we solicit donations for St. Michael’s Fowler Fund. Your contribution supports mini-grants to help variety of programs and situations in the larger community.

St. Michael's Fowler Fund honors the memory of St. Michael's long-time former rector, Father John Clinton Fowler. It consists of two parts, a permanent endowment and an expendable fund. The expendable fund, along with available interest from the permanent endowment, allows us to provide mini-grants to worthy organizations, primarily in the local Tucson community. Recent grants have provided start-up help to a center for abused women, assisted in the restoration of a fire-damaged church in Phoenix, funded urgent medical care under the auspices of the Guatemala Project, helped make homes handicap accessible for needy elderly individuals, and supported an organization which assists homeless men.

Please plan ahead, and consider making a special donation next week to the Fowler Funds. You will find an insert in next week’s bulletin, which you can place in the white envelope with your contribution, thus directing which portion(s) of the fund you are supporting. Our Fowler Fund Committee thanks all past donors for their significant generosity, and encourages each parishioner to consider providing a contribution to this year’s Fowler Fund appeal.

Notes from the Parish Office

Tragedy in Florida
Many of you have heard of the very tragic events at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville, Florida last Tuesday. An employee who was dismissed in the morning by the Headmaster, Mrs. Dale Regan, returned to school in the afternoon and fatally shot Mrs. Regan, and then turned the gun on himself. No students, faculty or staff were harmed. Mrs. Regan was a great leader of the Episcopal school and had been the head of the school since 2006 and served as administrator and teacher since 1978. Please keep Mrs. Regan and her family in your prayers this weekend. May Dale Regan’s soul and all the souls of the departed, through the mercy of God, Rest In Peace. Amen †

Up coming events:

  • This weekend, The Rev. Lucas Mix, from the U of A, will be preaching.
  • Last call for donating cleaning supplies, toiletries, etc. for TIHAN and those suffering with HIV/AIDS.
  • We need a few more volunteers for the “Poz Café” that St. Michael’s will be hosting at St. Francis in the Foothills on Thursday, March 15. Sign-up sheets are in the back of church.
  • St. Patrick’s Dinner Buffet this Saturday, March 17th at 6:30 PM. $10 per person, sign-up sheets in back of church.
  • Vestry Meeting next Saturday, March 17th beginning with Mass at 8:30 AM and then moving to the Parish Center at 9 AM for the meeting.
  • Copies of the March Messenger are located in the back of church.
  • Mass Assignment Schedules are located in the back of church.
  • St. Michael’s Parish Day School is having a “BOOK FAIR” this coming week in the Parish Center. Stop by and purchase a book for your children or grandchildren or that special child.

May God continue to richly Bless St. Michael's and all who enter here †

Buy a Brick for the St. Michael's Parish Day School

Be a Part of St. Michael’s Past, Present, and Future…

Sunken Garden photo by Karen Blocher As we celebrate our School’s 50th Anniversary, students, alumni/ae, parents, parishioners, grandparents, and friends of St. Michael’s have a wonderful opportunity to participate in the revitalization of a special place, the Sunken Garden. Remember when it was the social center for the Church? Now we can commemorate our relationship with the school and /or the church by purchasing a brick or paver. Bricks and pavers can be engraved with your name, a friend’s name, or the name of a loved one. Add a logo or the year to celebrate your graduation or wedding anniversary.

Our 50th Anniversary Mission:
To celebrate our school’s history and to strengthen the ties with our immediate and extended community in order to enrich the present and build a healthy future.

Specifications:
• 3 lines for a 4" x 8" Brick
• 6 Lines for an 8" x 8" Paver
- 4 lines if a logo is included
• 20 characters per line (includes spaces, punctuation, and suffix characters)
- 12 characters for 4" x 8" with bottom-center logo

A laser process is used to engrave each brick by applying intensive heat and transforming the clay to hardened glass, ensuring a beautiful, durable finish. Bricks will be red.

Click here for further details and order form.
